Rooftop Design in NYC: Timeless Elegance Above the City
Urban Pot, in collaboration with Marina Papas Interior Design, approached this New York City rooftop as a technical challenge: to create a functional outdoor environment that balances industrial durability with user comfort. The result is a planted terrace that provides residents with reliable outdoor space and unobstructed views of the city skyline.
A tailored approach to rooftop planting
The rooftop layout relies on a modular system of marine-grade aluminum planters, engineered to resist wind uplift and the demanding climate conditions typical of New York rooftops.
The layout consists of several strategic sections:
Spatial Definition: Over 30 planters in multiple sizes were specified, with 36-inch-high units used to delineate zones and 30-inch planters positioned to maintain sightlines toward the horizon.
Fabrication Details: Each planter features concealed welds and an integrated drainage system with raised feet, supporting both roof protection and long-term plant viability.
The Art of Living: Built-in Ipe wood furniture
A key aspect of the installation is the integration of seating areas. Urban Pot developed hybrid assemblies that combine metal planters with Ipe wood elements.
Planter Benches: 3/16-inch bent aluminum supports were used to fabricate integrated Ipe wood seats, with 45-degree joinery for precise alignment and finish quality.
Bench Assemblies: 78-inch-long benches are supported by tubular steel frames or solid Ipe bases, providing durable seating oriented toward city views.
A sculpted, luminous atmosphere
Custom lighting cutouts were integrated into the planter assemblies to provide illumination after dark. This approach highlights the installation's architectural lines and supports thesafe, functional use of the rooftop at night.
