Kingston Sustainable Apartments

For this sustainable residential project in Kingston, a series of custom-made planters made of powder-coated aluminum was designed to define the outdoor spaces while withstanding Canada’s harsh climate.
As part of the Kingston Sustainable Apartments project, our team manufactured and supplied a complete set of custom-made commercial aluminum planters. These planters integrate seamlessly with the modern residential architecture and meet the technical requirements of an exposed outdoor environment.
The project included 39 planters of varying sizes, creating a visual rhythm and structuring different spaces:
(5) planters 20" x 20" x 42" H
(16) planters 48" x 24" x 42" H
(5) planters 28" x 28" x 42" H
(3) planters 100" x 18" x 42" H
(10) planters 84" x 36" x 42" H
All planters are made of 1/8" thick marine-grade 5052-H32 aluminum, known for its corrosion resistance. This material is particularly well-suited to Canadian climates exposed to freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing salts.
Each unit is fully welded, with ground welds for a smooth, architectural finish. This finish eliminates any visible seam lines and ensures a high-end aesthetic that meets the standards of contemporary multi-family projects.
A 2" high rim reinforces the planters' structural rigidity and reduces the risk of deformation over longer lengths. The 1/4" deep recessed feet ensure optimal drainage beneath the planters, preventing direct contact with the ground and minimizing the risk of waterlogging or surface damage.
The drainage system incorporates strategically positioned perforations to ensure efficient water drainage, essential for the sustainability of the plantings and the long-term performance of the containers.
The black powder-coated finish offers a sleek and contemporary look, while providing long-lasting protection against weathering, UV rays, and everyday wear and tear. This factory-applied and oven-baked coating ensures superior adhesion and excellent durability.
Thanks to their lightweight yet robust design, these planters simplified installation logistics while respecting the building's structural constraints. This project illustrates the advantage of custom-made aluminum planters for high-density residential applications: a durable, aesthetically pleasing solution adapted to North American climatic conditions.
