Poplar Creek Apartments
Brookfield, WI
As part of the development of Poplar Creek Apartments, located in the heart of the new Poplar Creek Town Center urban district in Brookfield, Wisconsin, Urban Pot designed and manufactured a set of custom commercial planters to enhance the residential outdoor spaces and common areas.
The project included a total of 13 planters in complementary sizes, creating a balanced visual composition between linear and organic shapes:
(9) planters 80" x 30" x 42" H
(4) round planters Ø 48" x 42" H
The entire unit was crafted from 1/8" thick 5052-H32 marine-grade aluminum, a preferred material for multi-family projects due to its lightness, durability, and natural corrosion resistance. Unlike actual Corten steel, which can cause drips and stains on surrounding surfaces, aluminum replicates the desired aesthetic without the associated maintenance requirements.
Each planter was fully welded, with ground welds for a uniform, seamless finish. This level of craftsmanship ensures seamless architectural integration, particularly important in a high-end residential setting.
A 2" top rim has been incorporated to increase structural rigidity, particularly on the 80" elongated models, reducing the risk of warping over time. The 1/4" recessed feet slightly raise the planters, promoting drainage beneath the units and protecting floor surfaces.
The drainage system, including strategically positioned perforations, was designed to ensure efficient water management, essential for the sustainability of the plantations and the overall performance of the system.
The chosen finish, a Weathered Steel Viola powder coating from Tiger Drylac, faithfully reproduces the appearance of weathered steel while offering the advantages of powder coating: excellent resistance to UV rays, weathering, and everyday wear and tear. This finish choice helps create a warm and contemporary atmosphere, consistent with the urban design of the neighborhood.
